Summer Break = Perfect Time To Learn About Money!
|
It is never to early to begin learning basic financial ideas like budgeting and saving so have “The
Talk” with your parents… THE FINANICAL TALK!
Tell your parents that you want to use summer break to learn more about money and how to save
and budget it. Here are some cool ideas you can share with your parents that will help make you
a financial superstar!
|
Tell your parents you want to plan vacation this year! Have them give you a set amount that
they have budgeted and get to work. Pick a destination based on your budget, but don’t
forget to include the costs of travel (plane, train, or automobile?), lodging, food, any
entertainment and don’t forget the miscellaneous expenses like those awesome souvenirs
you might want.
|
Ask your parents to save the loose change in their pockets and give it to the each day for a
week. At the end of the week, talk to your parents about making a decisions on spending a
portion and saving a portion.
|
Choose something that you would really like to have to go back to school with. Make a
plan with your parents to receive an allowance and budget your money so that you have
enough to purchase the item by the end of summer. When you budget, don’t forget to
incorporate room for saving too!
|
Ask your parents to let you watch them pay their bills or balance their checkbook. Ask
them to explain to you how they budget for expenses and saving and how
they handle and monitor miscellaneous expenses that may come up.
|
Ask a parent to help you build a new type of budgeting piggy bank. Allow for four
separate slots in this one—one for saving, one for spending, one for charity, and one for
investing (like in a CCU Young Savers Certificate!)
|
Become an entrepreneur! Open up a lemonade stand or start a lawn mowing or dog walking
business. Check out great examples of young entrepreneurs on the PBS television show Biz Kid$.
