The Magic of Saving
Hocus-pocus--my money grew! Well, maybe it's not that easy to save, but
learning how from a young age, it can be. As you grow, you'll have one
of the most difficult aspects of saving under your belt--being consistent.
Take a minute to have some fun and color the genie and use the examples of
ways you can learn about magic of saving at all different ages!
Sort different types of money into piles by color and size.
Play grocery store or credit union and use a pretend cash register.
At the grocery store, help shop. Learn how to comparison shop--for
example, see if you can find a similar brand for that $4.99 box of cereal,
for half as much.
If you get an allowance, don't just let your parents decide how much. Sit
down with them and discuss allowance amounts and what you should use your
allowance for. Give them some input. Try to set aside part of your allowance
for spending, part for saving, and part for sharing. Clarify what they will
pay for and what you should be responsible for. For example, when you're at
the movies, maybe they agree to pay for a small drink and popcorn, but the
Milk Duds are on you.
Join us this year as we celebrate National Credit Union Youth Week from April
19-25. Our theme for 2009 is "The Magic of Saving." Get started right financially
and see how many bunnies--we mean monies--you can pull out of your hat!
