Tax Time or Scam Time?
Spring is on the way… what ideas are blooming for you?

Planning A Vacation?
Tax Time or Scam Time?
As deadlines for tax filing approach, the IRS is warning about fake emails being
sent to consumers. Criminals are using the filing deadline to try to commit fraud
and gain your personal financial information.
Emails stating that consumers are under investigation for the filing
of false tax returns are hitting inboxes in volume numbers. The
emails contain a link or attachment that you must click on or open
which will unleash a Trojan Horse virus that allow scammers to gain
remote access to your computer and your personal information.
Another scam hitting inboxes is an official looking email, supposedly
from the IRS, which states that the IRS is auditing you. You are
asked to complete and return an attached questionnaire and failure
to do so within a specified time frame will result in penalties. As you
can guess, the questionnaire asks for personal and financial
information, that scammers can use to gain access to your funds or
use to steal your identity. Some emails go as far as having a link
with a very official looking (yet fake!) website which asks for you to
input your personal and financial information.
If you receive any email asking for your personal information, even
if it APPEARS to be from the IRS, do not be afraid to disregard it.
The IRS warns that they NEVER use email to warn taxpayers about problems with
their returns or audits.
If you receive an email, protect yourself and simply delete it or you
can forward it to phishing@irs.gov.
